Well, I tried to post last night from my "smart" phone, but it decided that it had been smart enough for one day; thus, I had to wait until I had my laptop, so I could post on the blog.
Greetings everyone!
My name is Karla Erdman, and I am an English teacher at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In addition to teaching English to tenth graders, I also teach journalism and SAT preparation. Also, I'm the adviser for The Freedom Forum, our school newspaper. We are going through some major cuts and restructuring, so I may be teaching 11th graders next year, too.

I am excited, nervous, and wound-up to attend the Institute at ASU. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and working with different people and getting fabulous ideas. Since the temperature has risen quite a bit here in PA, I am slowly getting used to the heat.
My goal is to come away with some great lesson plan ideas, as well as article ideas for the newspaper. While no one is fan of criticism, I know I'll get a lot, but it will be useful and help my students grow.
Signing off for now. See everyone soon. Have a great end-of-the-school-year!

Hi! My name is Jennifer Chandler and I am from Pylesville, MD (fairly close to Baltimore). I have taught for 15 years at North Harford High School located in Pylesville. Minus the days when I can not leave the grocery store, restaurant, gas station, or even my mailbox without running into a parent or student I know, I love living in the community in which I work:)
ReplyDeleteCurrently my class schedule includes four journalism classes (Journalism I, II/III*newspaper, online, and broadcast (new this year) and two English 11 classes. I am really energized about this opportunity at ASU, however, I am bummed about leaving behind my 10 year old daughter Cassidy, my 3 year old daughter Kendall, and my supportive husband Jason. I am looking forward to networking, having an opportunity to gain a ton of new ideas and conversing with people who are as passionate about teaching and kids as I am.
If your school already has a newspaper, do you mind bringing a copy for me to see and I will do the same. We exchange with a lot of high schools in our state, but it would be cool to bring in papers from across the country.

Thanks for the post, Karla. I'm big on story ideas and ways to develop them. That's one of our first sections. See you soon.
