Hello all!
I'm Emily Miller and I am finishing up my fourth year of teaching. I teach at Arlington High School in Arlington, Texas. We're a school of about 3,000 students, 9-12, racially and economically diverse. I teach Journalism and Photojournalism and I advise the yearbook and the newspaper. Next year I am also taking on our literary magazine.
I graduated from the University of North Texas with a BA in journalism/public relations and went into marketing. After five years I realized it was not what I wanted to do and I admitted to myself that I wanted to teach, just like I had thought back in college. I went back and got my teaching certificate and haven't regretted it once. I love teaching. I love high school. I love the subjects I teach and the publications I advise and the kids I work with.
I applied for the ASNE Reynolds Institute because I want to take the newspaper online. My editor in chief won a nationwide contest sponsored by NBC and the top prize was $5,000. She will be a senior next year and our goal is to take that money and make a spectacular online publication. We have an online presence now but it is pretty pathetic. (See the link below.) Basically we take the stories we've put out in print and just slap them up online. One of the other high schools in our district has an amazing site and we drool with envy every time we look at it. (See the other link below.) I'm coming to Phoenix to take in everything I can that will help us online. I want to go back to school in August and blow up our online presence.

Welcome, Emily. I look forward to meeting you. In our second week, JEA digital guru Aaron Manfull will hold a morning-long session on getting online and thriving online. It promises to be a very helpful three hours.

Emily, I have website envy of a lot of "rival" schools too. I attempted to start an online presence this year but we have a long way to go. I am hoping to gain a lot of ideas and tips from everyone about creating a website that is successful.
