Visit to Pity City

For the first time in a long time I felt like someone wanted to listen to what journalism teachers had to say about our frustrations with the lack of understanding of all that we do.

Kristin Gilger, gave us an opportunity. It was nice to know, that I am not the only one who sometimes burdened with everything said to me.

Her most inspiring thing she said was, "you can visit pity city but you can't live there." I am going to take that philosophy into my classroom, I am thinking about making it into a poster. That is so true, not just for my students, but for myself.

We may not always get the support we want, or students we want to do everything - but we can CHANGE things.

We have to speak up for ourselves, we need to get to know our administration better, we need to invite them into our classrooms - let them see what these kids do.

Like she said, "rise above and don't engage."

And most importantly, "if you want to persuage someone, you have to be willing to move."\

This was a fantastic session, and I wish we had more than 90 minutes to work with her.

  1. She certainly helped me see why I need to get out of my comfort zone (my own classroom) and work on the relationship with my principal. He is a very supportive boss, but I should not take that for granted.

  2. I agree - I think the idea of inviting them into the classroom more, might be a good idea for our principals to see what we do.
