Tracy Collins and Typography

I had no idea that a simple letter could have so many different style names, heights and widths. I will probably not go into type as specifically as Tracy did, but I think that the basics are good to know. I can stop fixing the same errors over and over in the newspaper, if my students are a little more aware.
I enjoyed looking at the photos also. It was interesting to see what other teachers have done right and what they may have missed the mark on. I was surprised by the major newspapers that had such poor photos. Some of the headlines were so irrelevant in connection with the picture under it. However, it will be good to show my students and let them find the mistakes of professionals.
Overall, the idea was too have a well-balanced page. Which we all know as advisers, is not always the easiest thing to accomplish. The students want to focus on the glitter and glam of the page and they forget the most important thing, the purpose of the paper. We are, as Collins put it, the readers "Sherpa." We must lead them to the story as easily as possible.
No over complicating, no wild and distracting photos, and simple to follow modular design. In the end, what good is a newspaper if no one can read it?

  1. I like the idea of teaching through negative examples. Students love to tear others' work apart; it's always a good idea to direct them to their own work right afterwards (kind of like Collins did with us).

  2. I had no idea of any of this as well, it brought typography to a whole new level to me.

I think this will be a very beneficial session that we can take back to our students when we go over layout, designs, and font choice.
