Some Say It's Hot, Some Say It's Not

It’s noon. It’s sunny. It’s Phoenix. The mercury looms at 100 degrees.

Phoenix dwellers find ways to beat the heat. Children frolic at the YMCA-sponsored camp in the Civic Space, near the downtown Arizona State University campus. One boy says he pretends he’s inside his house playing the video game “Halo.” Another says he likes the spray from the two-story water slide.

Across the street at the YMCA, others say they drink plenty of water and energy drinks and spend the hottest time of the day in the gym, getting even hotter. The other option, one woman says, is to plan indoor activities during the day’s warmest times.

Downtown resident, Dave Zaiser, formerly from Pennsylvania, where he says the humidity and heat are more oppressive than the Phoenix temperatures, stays indoors, hydrates, and seeks shady spots to spend his afternoon.

Laughing and shrugging, Zaiser asks, “Heat? What heat? Hot is over 110 degrees.”
