Josh Coddington provided some helpful suggestions for my story. I admit I was anxious about receiving feedback from someone who bangs out stories on a daily basis.
When we sat down for lunch at Taylor Hall, I noticed my story on top of his pile. It was covered with red arrows and lines through sentences. However, it was not as bad as it looked.
Josh provided simple and direct suggestions on how to clarify my writing. By the time my story is published online, I will have benefitted from many viewpoints. I notived many teachers have commented that the editing process has made them more empathatic towards the students. While I think this certainly true for me, I am more attuned to the disapointment associated with devloping a point that I think will fit in the story and told to scrap it because it just doesn't work. How often does this happen with your students?

Yes! I have had to let go in the last few days and realize anew how hard it is. Resistance in us may come from our hard-won confidence, of course. After all, we are teachers and words are our friends and/or the tools of our trade (pick your metaphor). Our students also have some hard-won confidence, though we may not see it. We just see that they don't want to change anything they've written.
