Journalism in Jerome?

In the van moving down the road to Jerome we talked of the lessons from the week in the Institute.

After a stop along the way to picture the view the van wound it way up the 'mile high' hill to the little town. We were told Jerome is the third most popular place to visit in Arizona.

Lunch allowed us to have a conversation with the couple from Ohio. As we discovered we were both connected to publishing. The husband was constructing new presses in Phoenix and we were the teachers (much like his wife).

As we explained the Institute and our reason for visiting from Maryland and Kansas the couple explain how good it was to see teachers excited to learn. It gave them hope in the sometimes bleak outlook in public education.

This is something that most of us were excited to attend but little did we know just how much we can take home to our classrooms.

  1. You stole my idea Patty. I totally agree with your description. You never know where you're going to find journalism popping up--on a store in tiny Jerome, Ariz., or the people sitting next to you in a restaurant. I think that we sometimes get so busy in the crisis of the moment at school that we forget just how much of a positive impact we make in people's lives. Thanks for a great day--you're an excellent driver!

  2. I enjoy that you found a store called Nellie Bly - I wonder if they too, like Elizabeth Cochrane expose the realities of what is going on in society. I am going to have to take this photo to show my students when we're going over the History of Journalism.
