In a perfect world, school districts would budget in the cost of printing a newspaper and all the equipment necessary to teach a top-notch journalism program, but they don't so we are left to figure out how to make it work. The cool thing is, we do. We have found ways to survive and thrive no matter what our resources are.
It was refreshing to hear many of the similarities between what Allen does in his room to build a community of journalists who challenge each other, who are invested in and care about the process, and who celebrate the product.
One huge change I am making next year is the delivery method of our paper so that it gets into the hands of the students directly (during our flex period) and also requiring students to send thank you notes to sources but also cc me in on them.
