One of my favorite quotes from the institute so far! Part of a great talk about grading and assessment - it was really interesting to hear how many different ways people grade their journalism students. All 33 of us probably have a different system, but it's what works for us and our kids.
I can't believe I'm about to say this, but my favorite part of the institute today (minus the ballgame!) was gathering and editing the tape for our multimedia projects. I'm so surprised I enjoyed this because, to be perfectly honest, I was dreading it a little bit coming into today. Video is something I haven't worked with at all, so I was nervous about putting my hand to it with only yesterday's exercise as my experience coming in. I thought for sure I would let my group down when it came to this assignment.
While I can't speak about the value of my contributions today, I realized how much I miss being a reporter when we interviewed our subjects today. I also realized how wonderful the people of Phoenix are - the three who allowed us to interview them were so enthusiastic about talking to us, and they were pros at not looking at the camera! I even enjoyed the editing process, which I did not expect because working with technology is not my natural strong point. The work we did today boosted my confidence in this area so much, and it made me think that maybe this is something I can do! My group may still have a little bit of tweaking to do on our video, but I'm very proud of the product we've put together so far. Thanks Jeff and Jo Ann for making this such a great experience for me!

You and Jeff were both wonderful, and I too am proud of our result. The "Beat the Heat" piece we did will make stars of Shay, Samuel, and Myrna!
ReplyDeleteBridget I feel the same way about the video experience. I was really intimidated at the thought of going out and interviewing people on the street as well as video taping the whole thing but once we got going it was great fun. The video camera was very easy to use and people were happy to talk to us. The longer we spoke with them the more relaxed they got and I think they forgot the camera was even rolling. Now, I'm still an amateur at the actual editing but it is so much fun to play with. I really want to get my kids into video for our online paper. Even short interviews would really enhance the publication.
