I re-wrote, edited and sweated over my article, as I know did everyone else. I remembered journalism do's and dont's that I had long forgotten. It was the best training I have had by far in comparison to others that I had to attend.
It was interesting to work on a team and get to see new sides of people's personalities come out. Some became calm and collected, while others lost sleep. The perfectionist in me came out and I woke up multiple times in the middle of the night with an idea on how to change my article.
Overall, I value the perspective that the institute has given me. I all too often think the students are just being lazy, but the reality is that
this is not easy. It is not easy to put your work on display for all to scrutinize and critique.
Our students take our criticism on a daily basis. Remembering how tedious that can be, I will be more aware of how I am critiquing and dishing out advice.

I agree. It is so stressful I think we definitely have to have scaffolds for the kids who need them, so that the writing and publishing process is easier and more accessible to them.
ReplyDeleteIt was a great exercise showing how peer collaboration can work well. Each participant is responsible for his or her own story, but still works within a small group to polish it, refine it, and otherwise get it ready to publish.
