Week 1 Snapshot

The most fascinating speaker of Week 1 was Nick Oza. I chose Nick because I am very interested in photojournalism and the multi-tasking involved with this career. How exciting to to take the nut kernel of a story and develop it something so deeply expanded, photograph it, edit it and see the birth of a finished product. I guess it is almost like the conception of a child and nine months later see its birth. The only caveat, it has to be done yesterday for publication!!
I was also moved by the compassion and emotion expressed by this photojournalist and his devotion to the people involved with the story. He takes chances, throws caution to the wind and will walk to the precipice to get the story without regard for sleep or personal safety. Nick is the ultimate and has been noted for his achievements with the Pulitzer Prize- BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!

  1. We have had so many gifted speakers that choosing a favorite would be difficult. What I do value about Nick's presentation is his sense of community and his commitment to capturing the news in pictures. Too many times in my student newspaper, I have seen photographers who are under-appreciated or ignored because the writers don't respect their schedules and don't give them an idea of what kind of story to photograph.
I wish I could bring Nick to York, Pa. to speak to my students. Is there a journalism genie who would grant this wish?
