Nick Oza's presentation was excellent. "It's journalism, not art." "Be sensitive but not shy." "Try to find the iconic photo." "Find the different angle for the story, not the obvious." "Light is everything." There were so many great quotes, full of so much great advice. I have 13 years experience with filming video. But, I am far from confident about photography and its importance to a news story. Nick gave me confidence and many great ideas. His dedication and his story are inspiring.
I have two students dedicated to photography on my paper next year. They are both very talented and devoted to their craft. In fact, they are SO great, I was very concerned that I would have nothing to offer them as far as instruction, motivation, etc. I still am a total newbie at photography. But, I do feel I can talk with them about the overarching motivation behind their photography and how important it is to the success of our paper.

It also helps having a specific example of a photohound and his body of work to point to. It's not just photojournalism in action: it's also, "Well, here's the kind of material he covers; how would *you* do it?"

Dave,
ReplyDeleteGood points. Meeting someone like Nick Oza is both inspiring and humbling. Sometimes I wish I had a job like his, but I know that every job has its downside too. Now if I could only get that job working for National Geographic in the Bahamas!
