Merging television, online and print

The concepts of merging television, online and print is a very innovative idea. This is something I would really like to incorporate into my classroom next year and listening to the staff at the Arizona Republic speak really seemed to validate my reasoning. This is something we've talked about a lot this week and I keep getting more and more reasons as to why my staffs need to work better together instead of separately. They all need to have these skills - not just the broadcasters doing TV and the writers writing for the paper. This is probably one of the most important things I've learned so far this week. I knew that I wanted to try it and now I know that I have to try it.

It was also nice to hear yet another person tell us that to teach the basics is really what news editors around the country are looking for. Arizona Republic Editor Aric Johnson, ASU Multimedia Project said that the skills needed are to be able to report accurately and quickly. That is what he is looking for.

Very good information that I intend to take back home to my classroom.

  1. It is an interesting point that all of these professional journalists are emphasizing the idea that it is important to teach journalism basics before we go anywhere else. I agree, I will be taking this back to my school.

  2. Great point about teaching the basics before going anywhere else. I was struck by the fact that Aric kept emphasizing how important it is for the reporters at his desk to get the facts right the first time. It really must be a high-pressure job! But it highlights the point we've been hearing that the truth has to trump the story.

It sounded to me like Aric also emphasized comfort with technology maybe a little more than anyone else has, but it just seems like the more we can do to produce well-rounded students, the better off they'll be when they head to college.
