Yesterday, Kristin Gilger, associate dean at ASU's Cronkite School, gave an insightful presentation called "Managing Your Boss," which explored employee-boss relationships, particularly as they apply to schools. Pictured above, Jeremy Zona and Emily Miller portrayed a school principal and a journalism adviser during a role-playing exercise wherein the principal was uncomfortable with the idea of the school paper publishing a potentially controversial editorial written by a student. Gilger explained how keeping an open dialogue is important, even when the parties "agree to disagree." The three C's by which good bosses are measured, she said, are competence, communication, and compassion.

Jeremy and Emily did a great role play. We learned more than we expected.

This was a very valuable lesson. My principal is terrific. But, I have problems at the district level. I got some great material with which I can arm myself for the next battle...I mean discussion.
