Jim Trotter, AP regional editor

Jim Trotter, a regional editor for the Associated Press, gave a powerful presentation at the ASNE Reynolds High School Journalism Institute in which he shared some examples of noteworthy storytelling. They included a touching series called "Final Salute," about a fallen Marine's heart-rending return home. The complete article accompanying photos can be found at http://www.rockymountainnews.com/special-reports/final-salute/

Trotter also shared an emotional look at the death of the Rocky Mountain News itself, which published its last edition in 2009, after being in print for nearly 150 years. Trotter worked as an editor at that paper before its demise, and helped put together a behind-the-scenes video telling the story. The 21-minute video he showed the first half of to the class is found on vimeo at this link: http://vimeo.com/3390739
