End of Week One. . .Wow

I haven't crammed so much learning into one week in a long time. Highlights of our first week at the ASNE/Reynolds Institute included going on a video assignment with fellow teachers Richard Franco and Jeremy Zona, pictured filming Shannon McShea here. We had a great time putting together a short video clip on how smart people beat the Arizona heat.

Other highlights included getting some hands-on training in InDesign and Photoshop, and learning from some of the great masters of current journalism, including Steve Doig and Nick Oza. Nick was of particular interest to me, as photography has been a passion of mine since I was ten years old.

Visiting the Arizona Republic was a great bonus and it was a pleasure to speak with the front page designer, as well as sit in on a meeting of the main section editors. Practically speaking though, I've probably learned the most this week from Professor Steve Elliott and master teacher Alan Weintraut, who have spoken to us on topics ranging from ethics, to grading, to AP style and more. I end each day tired and with my head buzzing from all the info, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
