Basics of Page Design

This morning, professional page designer Tracy Collins, who works for The Arizona Republic and Design Studio Phoenix, gave a detailed presentation on the art of page design. Collins explored the history of newspaper page layouts, and showed plenty of examples, including the good, the bad, and the downright ugly. Fonts and typography were also discussed, along with the proper use of photographs and other artistic elements. Collins also critiqued several newspaper pages that had been submitted by the Reynolds Institute participants in advance, and showed how the overall presentation or appearance of certain pages might have been improved.

"You are there to ease the readability of the paper," he said.

  1. This was a really valuable session. I learned a tremendous amount of vocabulary, and seeing the examples, both good and bad, really helped me understand the concepts.

In the past I've taught design on the fly--at deadline--by just telling students what to do and what not to do as it comes up.

After today's session, I will very use a lot more of direct instruction on page design.
