Yesterday, after my layout day came up short, I took the extra time to read the news from Arizona and devise some story ideas for our Institute paper. It wasn't too hard to come up with some ideas, and I can surely find the time to write, but I cannot imagine where the time will come from to do the legwork. I know we all teach, so we're all in the same end-of-the-year stretch. I just cannot imagine the time for interviewing and research, especially when the interviewing has to take place during working hours and I'm, well, working during that time!
What is everybody doing about this?
I agree with the time element. My school is not out until June 8 and I have a senior supplement to send to the printer by June 10. By the time I finally get to sit down at the home computer it is 8 p.m.
ReplyDeleteBut thanks to the 5-hour energy drinks I believe I can make it.
I recommend keeping your ideas focused on topics related to happenings and issues close to the institute. That way you'll be able to ask questions of speakers, faculty and fellow participants to move things along. I've seen more than a few fellows now flame out trying to report stories that aren't related to journalism and high school journalism topics connected to the institute. Some have succeeded covering things immediately around the institute such as the Cronkite School's home and Phoenix light rail system. The further people get from those kinds of topics, the more they generally struggle. There just isn't time for it. Good luck.
