Working with a Deadline

One of the benefits of being at the ASNE/Reynolds Institute this week is that working on deadlines has allowed us as journalism teachers to empathize with our students. Yesterday's story deadline was exhilarating and a bit tiring, but if I had a AP biology exam to study for and an English paper to write and daily doubles in football on top of it all. . . well I can see how our journalism kids can feel a bit overwhelmed at times.

Yesterday I had the privilege of interviewing my own newspaper's managing editor, Patrick Webb of The Daily Astorian for my story. I asked Mr. Webb where he thought journalism and newspapers would be in 10 years, but he wouldn't forecast that far. "In five years I think there still will be a print edition of The Daily Astorian," Web said. "The key thing is that our core values will not change no matter what our delivery system is."

Alan Weintraut's presentation on Staff Organization and Management was one of the most useful thus far. He has given us so many great ideas and handouts I feel like I need a filing system just to organize them. However, his students' video of his journalism class was particularly interesting. Alan has a great setup, but his students take obvious pride in what they have and what they do. Success really does breed success.

  1. The handouts are wonderful. I fully plan to use them. I have some sticky tabs if you need some.
