Survived Steve & Alan's Article/Picture Evaluation...so far.

This morning we began with a debriefing by Steve Elliott & Alan Weintraut on the articles we wrote, and pictures we took, covering Steve Doig's presentation yesterday. Both instructors used a very effective method of presenting some articles/photos as examples and utilizing them to discuss overall issues many of us had in our writing & photography. I am looking forward to receiving Steve's actual red ink feedback later today. This particular process is very valuable in two ways: The feedback itself will make me a better writer and editor. And, it gives me a very real sense of how my students feel or react to the same process in my newsroom.

  1. Dave,

I agree with you the importance of feedback, both the positive and the negative. Even though it feels good to get positive feedback, when I look back at my life, it was usually the negative feedback that made me a better writer.

  2. It was instructive to see how different all the stories were. We all attended the same speech, but our lessons learned were different, at least judging by the leads we saw.

  3. I totally agree with the feedback. I was praying that mine wouldn't be too bad (it's intimidating to have a real live journalist edit your work). Since we haven't gotten them back yet, I'm hoping that's not too terrible of a thing. Surely Steve is just busy, right?

I do like the positive feedback to go with the constructive criticism. I don't do enough of that in my classroom but will from now on. I also like the immediate feedback for obvious reasons.
