Today we had a great presentation by Robin Phillips, who is the Web managing editor for the Donal W. Reynolds Nation Center for Business Journalism, on social media. It was a great presentation that covered all of the advantages of using Twitter and Facebook as reporting options as well as finding stories for our local high school publications.
The big thing that I took from the presentation is that although most high schools ban social media on their computers, there are tons of ways to still incorporate social media with a high school newspaper or broadcast news show. For instance, you can use twitter to tweet immediate news like sports scores or guest speakers. That is a great way for the student community to connect outside of school. Another way is to post links to stories on a school newspaper facebook page. This gives students and open forum to discus ideas and hopefully those conversations lead to story ideas.
It was a great presentation and very informative.

My district blocks FB and Twitter but I'm thinking I'll go back to my principal and see if there is any way around that. They would be such great tools for my publications! I'm thinking using them for promotions would really boost our visibility and yearbook sales, and they'd be great tools for bringing diverse coverage to our paper.
