Mentors and a Movie

Going through the process of research, interview, rough draft, peer edit, mentor edit and copy edit (by Steve) before finalizing our story was perhaps the most valuable experience for me these two weeks. First, it showed me the high standards that we should hold ourselves and the students that we teach. It also showed me the power of good journalistic writing.

I really appreciated my mentor's approach to editing. Josh Cottington (pictured here with Gregg) has the practical, yet relaxed approach of an editor who doesn't get flustered easily. I think he would be a good man to work for. He picked apart our pieces, but let us down gently, an approach I should emulate with my students.

What an immense privilege it was to hear from Leonard Downie Jr. following dinner! It was like traveling back through time to one of the most significant eras in American politics. I look forward to hearing more from him and his role in the Watergate reporting today.
