First Amendment Awareness

This morning's session by ASNE president Ken Paulson reminded my why I teach journalism.
My school's newspaper has been extracurricular for the past six years, and while I try to spend some time at the beginning of every year doing a mini-lesson about the First Amendment during orientation sessions, there is just not much time to go into depth. I am eager to really engage the class in discussion of the history of the First Amendment and to help the students to feel empowered to exercise their rights.

I am pleased to learn about the 1forall.us grant opportunities shared by Mr. Paulson, and I plan on applying so that my school's newspaper can lead a school-wide First Amendment awareness day, maybe even a First Amendment awareness week, which is something that I have thought about doing ever since I took a Journalism Law class a few years ago. Now that our newspaper will be a class, maybe this is the year to actually do it! Have any of my fellow journalism advisers ever sponsored a school-wide First Amendment outreach? If so, what sorts of activities did you do?

  1. It occurs to me that those of us advising a club might have the students organize a 1st Amendment event on campus. By teaching others, they would themselves learn so much more. I have to think harder about what it might look like. I'd love to brainstorm with you.

  2. The grant deadline for next school year has already passed, May 15th. I was planning on sending an email to Ken Paulsen at ASNE requesting an extension and will let you know if that is something he can help us with.

  3. Bummer. I didn't notice the deadline, but you can bet that I'll apply next year and take advantage of whatever I can this year!
