Feeling Very Behind!

Hello all,

Even though I'm not in the same boat as some of you still in school (I've been out a couple of weeks), I have not been home to keep up with the blog and facebook so I feel very behind. I had a pretty rough year and the last week of school was not pleasant at all. My family took off to the lake for some alone quiet time away from everything for over a week as soon as school was out. And this week I'm trying to finish up the last yearbook deadline and get ready to leave my babies for two weeks. As someone else stated, I'm not really sure what I was thinking when I thought I could leave for this long - my two year old may not ever forgive me! Anyway, on to my introduction:

My name is Angela Carter and I live in Oxford, KS (about 35 miles southeast of Wichita) and teach in Winfield, which is about 10 miles east of me. I teach newspaper, yearbook and this last year team taught a new broadcast class with a fellow teacher who has no journalism experience. I just finished my 10th year of teaching and have done yearbook and newspaper since I started. I got my bachelors in English and have my masters in Curriculum and Instruction. The only journalism experience I have is what I've read in books and tried to pick up as I taught my students (we have attended the JEA national convention for the past 9 years as well). I also attended the JEA's First Amendment Forum in Nashville several years ago and that was very helpful.

I am very excited to have been selected for this amazing opportunity and hope to gain a wealth of information. I have many questions about broadcast and putting our paper online. The lady that I team teach with is amazing at technology but has no journalism experience at all. She is counting on me for all the answers so I'm ready to learn them! We do have our broadcasts online if anyone is interested in looking at them - www.mywhsnews.com We started the year posting articles from our newspaper but that got left behind as we got busy. I hope to learn how to make this happen and actually look good. I also hope to learn how to motivate my students to write good stories. My staff is very small (5 next year) and very inexperienced. It will be a challenge.

Sorry if this sounds a bit disjointed - the second I get busy is when all three of my boys need me for something... Looking forward to meeting all of you - and the heat will be nothing. We've been at 102 - 104 for over a week now.

  1. I know what you mean about leaving the kids. Mine our 7 and almost 3, I don't know if they realize how long two weeks is. My husband set up Skype accounts at home and at my parents', where they will be during the day, so hopefully that will keep the sadness at bay.
